Validation of a new patient-reported outcome measure of balance recovery confidence (BRC) for community-dwelling older adults: a study protocol

Background Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide clinicians a greater understanding of patients’ perceived ability in their physical performance. Existing PROMs on falls efficacy meaningful information about the older people to perform common activities daily living without falling. However, recover balance from slip, trip, or volitional movements has been inadequately assessed. Balance recovery confidence relates judgment self-reactive ability. The scale (BRC) is new PROM that self-efficacy. purpose study protocol describe first psychometric evaluation BRC’s measurement properties.Objective This validation phase newly developed conducted Singapore.Methods Two hundred community-dwelling adults, aged 65 years and older, will complete five self-reported instruments (BRC, Activities-specific Confidence Scale, Falls Efficacy Scale-International, Late-Life Function Disability Instrument-Function Global Perceived Effect) three performance (Hand strength dynamometer, 30-second Chair Stand, Mini BESTest). Classical test theory methods assess acceptability, data completeness, targeting items, scaling assumptions, internal consistency reliability construct validity. Factor analysis establish unidimensionality. Rasch evaluate item fit, differential functioning, response ordering, persons items reliability.Results findings this be published peer-reviewed journals presented at national international conferences rehabilitation-specific context.Conclusions BRC. give among researchers use BRC fall management research clinical practice.
